A Film by Kamal Derkaoui
Synopsis
Plastic bags…the moment
the wind starts to blow, they fly
everywhere.
Humans manufacture them
on mass, use them - often just
once - and then toss them away.
M is for Mica (Mica is the
Moroccan name for plastic bag)
tells the story of one such discarded
bag and its remarkable
quest for freedom.
The story begins in Mica's
native Morocco where, buffeted
by the winds, he travels further a
field than ever. Along the way, he
meets fellow plastic bags, both
good and evil, lonely and in-love.
He also encounters a young girl
committed to cleaning up the
countryside, and a clever young
boy determined to have her notice
him.
Mica's biggest dream, however,
is to escape Morocco…and
dance through the windswept
streets of North America. He
plans to twirl amongst the skyscrapers,
and tumble through
towns in search of the prettiest
plastic bag imaginable. But Mica's
dream turns into his worst nightmare
as he comes face to face
with poop-and-scoop, the fecalfate
of the common plastic bag.
Mica awakes to discover himself
caught on a fence in a Moroccan
harbor and watches, no
longer longingly, as ships set sail
for America. A sudden gust of
wind carries him back in the direction
from which he has come, and
he billows above the same young
girl, now running through a field.
The young boy, catching up with
her, produces a beautiful, multicolored
flower he has created
from discarded plastic bags. But
the girl's joy is short-lived, as she
discovers before them an enormous
field covered entirely by
plastic bags. Directed by the wind,
Mica joins the demonic dance.
